Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit
To help meet a growing community need for inpatient psychiatric hospital beds and psychiatric services, Northwest Hospital has opened a new and expanded behavioral health unit in its newest tower. The old unit was licensed for 14 beds; the new one, which opened its doors in early February 2013, is licensed for 23 beds.
The psychiatric unit will serve adult patients over the age of 18 who need to be hospitalized for conditions such as depression, schizophrenia and mood disorders. These patients have emotional and behavioral difficulties, so they can no longer live or function safely in their usual daily environment and routine.
The design of the unit took patient safety and well-being considerations into account. To prevent patients from harming themselves, doors, lighting and bathroom fixtures have safety mechanisms; artwork is mounted within the walls; power outlets are safety-proofed; and electronic beds have enclosed wiring. The new unit is very aesthetically pleasing and has two communal rooms equipped with large, flat-screen televisions. Patients are encouraged to join in the unit’s support groups, arts and crafts sessions, and social events held in these rooms.
The inpatient unit provides 24-hour skilled psychiatric nursing care and interventions, daily assessment and treatment oversight by a psychiatrist, and a coordinated, goal-driven plan of care delivered by a multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals. The focus is on rapid stabilization of acute psychiatric symptoms. This is accomplished during an average length of stay of six days, in preparation for moving the patient to the next phase of treatment in a less restrictive setting.
Additional consultations from specialists such as dieticians are available as needed. The multidisciplinary treatment team combines various fields of expertise to provide the most positive therapeutic experience possible for each patient. Multiple treatment modalities are used, including individual therapy, group therapy, education groups, family therapy and physician oversight.
Patients are encouraged to join in the unit’s therapeutic support groups, including expressive therapies such as art and music, and social events. These activities are held in two communal rooms.
