The Anesthesia Department makes our patients' well being and comfort our utmost concern while they are under our care at Northwest Hospital.
We usually consult with our patients immediately prior to their entry into the operating room. During this interview, we review each patient's pertinent medical history, laboratory data, X-ray and EKG results provided to us by the primary care physician or the surgeon. Once this information is confirmed, we create a customized anesthetic management plan, taking into account the type of surgery being performed and the patient's medical conditions and comfort level.
While most surgery is conducted under either general anesthesia or major regional anesthesia (spinal or epidural), when appropriate, we also are prepared to provide patients with nerve blocks to help manage postoperative pain. These blocks are very effective in reducing or eliminating the need for post-operative narcotics. The appropriateness of this technique will be discussed with each patient's surgeon before being incorporated into his or her care plan.
Sedation anesthesia or "twilight anesthesia" is available when the procedure being performed does not demand the more complicated forms of anesthesia as described earlier.
If you have any concerns regarding your anesthesia care prior to your day of surgery, please feel free to contact the Anesthesia Department at Northwest Hospital at 410-701-4547. If necessary, a meeting can be arranged for a more extensive review of your conditions.
