The Behavioral Health Unit, located in the Specialty Hospital at Levindale, is designed to provide treatment to those with medical and psychiatric issues. Patients have a medical attending as well as a psychiatry consultant who develop a treatment regime for each patient.
Patients must be at least 55 years old with a change in mental status, agitation, cognitive or functional decline, depression, anxiety, dementia, and psychosis, as well as complex, difficult-to-treat mood disorders.
Quality of Care
A geropsychiatrist, internist and a team of health care specialists work together to give each patient individualized attention. Treatment intervention includes:
- Medical management
- Medication management
- Group, individual, family, or a combination of those
- Therapies
- Therapeutic recreation
- Rehabilitative services
- Discharge planning
Length of Stay
The length of stay in the Behavioral Health Unit depends on how the individual patient responds to treatment and is between 20 and 25 days. Patients may transition off the unit into a step down unit for continued medical care or transition into one of the outpatient programs.
Once treatment is completed, patients may transition back into the community or participate in the Partial Hospitalization Program or the Outpatient Mental Health Clinic. Both programs are covered by most insurance.
