The Alfred I. Coplan Pediatric Hematology Oncology Outpatient Center at the Herman & Walter Samuelson Children’s Hospital at Sinai provides a large, bright and friendly space for our littlest of patients and their families. The clinic embraces a patient- and family-centered approach by providing better exam and infusion facilities for patients and their accompanying family members.
The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the cares for infants and children with the following conditions:
- Hematologic and malignant disease
- White cell and platelet disorders
- Coagulation disorders
- Solid tumors
Blood counts, bone marrow aspirates and spinal fluid examinations are performed in the pediatric laboratory located within the clinic. As one of the most comprehensive pediatric departments found in a community hospital, division is available around the clock for emergency consultation, and includes numerous specialists and a 10-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
Features of the clinic include:
- Five large exam rooms that are patient centric.
- Technology that supports the electronic health record.
- Five private infusion bays that are monitored in a new nursing station configuration.
- A design space that allows for improved information access of the patient chart while providing a comforting, yet bright, child- and adolescent-friendly environment.
- A private family conference room located next to the clinic
- Social worker offices that provide a space for learning resources, as well as private family meetings.
The clinic is near the main hospital entrance, providing easier access and proximity to other hospital services as well as the Alvin & Lois Lapidus Cancer Institute, home to the outpatient infusion center. Both areas share the same laboratory and pharmacy.
The facility supports the very heart of a family-centered care program where the family is recognized as the constant in a child’s life. For this reason, family-centered care is built on partnerships between families and health professionals during and after a child is treated for a diagnosed illness. Most important, family-centered care improves and enhances clinical outcomes for children with special needs and provides more support for families as they deal with the challenges of raising a chronically ill child.
The Samuelson Children’s Hospital also offers our patients the Bridge Clinic for pediatric cancer survivors two or more years off therapy. The clinic is run by Jason Fixler, M.D., and Joseph Wiley, M.D.
